Year 2 Trip to Roche Court

Last Friday (23rd November), on a cold and misty morning, Year 2 went for their cross-curricular trip to look at the amazing sculptures in the grounds of Roche Court. We started with Black and Blue by Zack Ove; with its serried ranks of giant Nigerian men and mask like faces looming out of the mist and gloom all adding to the atmosphere and fuelling the children’s imagination. We danced around Barry Flannigan’s giant hare playing a tambourine and looked at the future whilst lying on a giant flying saucer by Peter Newman. We finally stepped back to earth when we stepped through a Wonderland sized key hole. I was constantly impressed with the imagination and vocabulary that came from the children as they reacted with wonder at all the pieces, finding their own interpretations for what the pieces of art might be about. One theme that we met a few times was hybrid creatures, so in the afternoon the children created their own maquettes of hybrid creatures made from pegs, wire, paper, pipe cleaners and coloured tape. These are now proudly displayed in our classroom for all to admire.
