Year 2 Exploring outside the classroom

The Badger and Owl classes have been exploring The Close and the City as part of their topic, ‘Salisbury Our City.’ Togged up in coats and hats they set off for their Historical and Geographical trails. They snaked through the Close and had a first stop at the High Street Gate learning that every night this huge gate is closed and locked. The materials used to build the various buildings were discussed and we looked at their use today. The children were amazed to hear that Prezzo was once a bookshop! We stopped at various places on the map, where each time a child read out the information about the history of the building including who lived there. The Old George Mall and its past interested many. The children were encouraged to look up and examine things above eye level which led to much pointing and gasps as they discovered something new. One of these spots was at the Cinema, where the shields were a new sighting for some. The information at The White Hart made many glad to travel to London by train or car, rather than the bumpy stagecoach ride from the White Hart! They did love the majestic white hart standing on the roof.

The Close Trail included the important houses in the Close where we also found Kings, Arundell, Braybrooke and Wren, where the choristers used to have lessons and play on Choristers Green.

The children were polite and inquisitive and real ambassadors for the school. They returned to school full of details about our City and eager to find out more.
