Sam learns maths at Bath University!

In January, SCS was invited by Bath University to send some appropriate Year 8 students to attend their Royal Institution Mathematics Classes. This involved giving up a number of Saturday mornings and part of the afternoon to attend challenging workshops on mathematical problem solving held at Bath University. Each Saturday had a different theme led by different maths professors and students at the university.

Sam, in Year 8, rose to the challenge and attended most of their workshops. I attended one with him to see what he was experiencing. This involved being in a large lecture theatre, seeing how maths professors explained different mathematical problems and then, in smaller groups, watching able Y8 mathematicians explore how to solve the problems. Sam certainly rose to the challenge, mixing easily with other students from all over the region and being challenged with demanding mathematical problems!

Sam says of his experience, ‘My time at Bath University was really an eye-opener. I particularly enjoyed learning about fractals. It made me look forward to going to university’.
