Business success with the Year 8 Junior Entrepreneurs

Over the past few weeks the Friends have organised and run our second annual ‘Junior Entrepreneur’ scheme involving the Year 8 pupils. The aim is to help the children to understand key business concepts and then have the opportunity to put them into practice.

Working together in teams, they were challenged to come up with an idea for a fete stall that they had to run as a business. This meant they had to think about how to understand their target market, develop a unique selling proposition, market their stall, source materials, estimate P&L, determine pricing, and deliver a great product and service. Each child also had to stand up and deliver presentations on two occasions, which they all did incredibly well.

Joining me in judging the overall performance of the teams was Alex Lewis (of the Alex Lewis Trust), Lauren Hammerton from our sponsor the Sandown dealership of Mercedes Benz (who very kindly sponsored this year and contributed the seed money to the teams), and school parent and marketing professional Samara Zwanger.

Between us we judged the teams based on the initial presentation of their business ideas, their overall teamwork, how they ran their business on the day, their profits, and their final presentation to the judges.

Congratulations to the winning team CordIce, who made refreshing fizzy cordial drinks in a range of flavours. The team members Susannah, Marie-Therese, Will and Max all enjoyed the reward of a go-kart racing session at Thruxton (during school time!).

Profits from the venture will go to both the Alex Lewis Trust and the winning team’s choice of charity, the British Heart Foundation.

We look forward to running this initiative again next year!
