Year 1 and 2
Building on experiences in EYFS, the teachers in Years 1 and 2 offer rich and exciting experiences with regular trips, visitors and plenty of opportunities for hands-on investigation and problem solving. Children make sure use of our newly-developed outdoor learning area, designed to promote creative and child-led learning opportunities.
In core subjects, our pupils are taught how to use and apply their mathematical knowledge and relate it to their everyday lives. They develop excellent mental skills and are encouraged to give mathematical explanations of the strategies and methods they used to solve a problem. In literacy pupils are introduced to a wide range of genres and literature. We want pupils to enjoy the magic of books and to develop a love of both written and spoken language. Pupils are taught spelling and grammar rules and also consolidate their phonic knowledge and develop cursive handwriting.
Spelling and Maths homework are set on a weekly basis and pupils are encouraged to read or engage in a reading based activity each night. Where appropriate, pupils are given tasks or challenges linked to topic work
Pupils also continue to build upon and benefit from the specialist teaching lessons introduced earlier on in the school. In computing, the pupils are introduced to simple programming and enjoy using the school IT suite.
In Years 1 and 2 pupils are encouraged to work towards greater independence. Pupils progress at different rates with some pupils needing further challenge and extension whereas others need additional support in a specific area. Careful monitoring, tracking and assessment of pupil progress allows us to best support children in their learning.
