The Garden Project

The Garden Project

The Challenge

“to create a vibrant garden teeming with natural shade, flourishing biodiversity, and a productive vegetable garden for community use”
Salisbury Cathedral School is undertaking a transformative project to revitalise the outdoor area around the Pre-Prep buildings and adjacent lawn. We are working to raise £70,000 to bring this vision to life. This ambitious Garden Project will reimagine an underutilised space into a vibrant garden that enhances biodiversity, nurtures a love of nature, and serves as a valuable community resource. Our hope is to create a sanctuary that strengthens connections with our friends, families, and neighbours.

History of the Garden

Before the school’s Pre-Prep buildings were constructed in the 1960s, this area served as essential kitchen gardens for the historic Bishop’s Palace. The school has called the Bishop’s Palace home since 1946, though the palace itself dates back centuries. In fact, when Salisbury Cathedral’s foundation stones were laid in 1220, the Bishop’s Palace was already near completion. While we don’t have an image of the original kitchen garden, evidence of it remains: the Pre-Prep building stands on the old garden’s path, marked by an Espalier Apple Tree. The new vegetable garden, therefore, reconnects us to this site’s deep-rooted history.

The Opportunity

  • Enhance Local Biodiversity: Through diverse planting that includes native species and pollinator-friendly plants, the garden will create a thriving ecosystem, contributing to biodiversity right in our community.
  • Inspire Young Gardeners with Sustainable Practices: By introducing students to sustainable gardening techniques, the project will foster an appreciation for nature and equip them with skills to care for the environment, building a foundation for future environmental stewardship.
  • Build a Community Resource: The garden will invite local residents to work alongside our students, cultivating produce that will be shared with charities addressing food poverty in our city. By creating a space where neighbours can garden together, we hope to strengthen community bonds and provide essential support to those in need.
  • Support Salisbury Cathedral School's Legacy of Excellence: Your involvement will help sustain Salisbury Cathedral School’s longstanding tradition of providing exceptional education to choristers and other pupils alike. By investing in this transformative project, you are not only enhancing our outdoor environment but also supporting a school dedicated to nurturing talent, character, and a love of learning for generations to come.
