Year 8 Play - 39 Steps

What a romp! This year's Year 8 production of The 39 Steps was an utterly hilarious show from start to finish, packed with laughter, chaos, mystery and more than a few unexpected handcuffs!Even more impressive was the fact that the children and staff put the entire production together in just five days. Learning lines, mastering comic timing, moving scenery and bringing such a fast-paced show to life in less than a week is no small feat. It was an incredible performance and a fantastic way for our Year 8s to finish the year. They were simply brilliant.A special mention must go to Vinnie, who took on the demanding role of Richard Hannay. His portrayal was utterly superb, learning a huge number of lines from memory and delivering them with epic comic timing throughout. He carried the show magnificently and had the audience laughing from beginning to end.Daisy and Emma, as the Clowns and Heavies, seemed to be constantly on stage, lugging scenery, rolly-pollying across the set and generall

SCS U11s Somerset Cricket Tour

Twelve excited cricketers from Years 5 and 6 set off for Somerset last week for the second Salisbury Cathedral School Colts Cricket Tour, and what a wonderful few days it proved to be.The tour began with a training session and lunch at King's Bruton before a thrilling T20 victory against Queen's College Prep in the afternoon. From there, the team travelled to Wellington Prep, whose fantastic generosity and hospitality made the tour possible.Friday brought a blustery but brilliantly enjoyable morning at Brean Beach, one of the genuine highlights of the tour. The children completed an epic walk around the peninsula, exploring the old fortifications, playing beach games and tucking into toasties and chips. An afternoon pairs match against Wellington followed, with SCS again coming out on top and Tommy producing a star performance. The day ended with another delicious supper, watching a superb performance of Alice in Wonderland by Wellington's talented Year 6 pupils, and another fun evenin

Leadership Activity Day at Cheltenham College

On Monday a group of Year 5s had an exciting and rewarding Leadership Activity Day at Cheltenham College, where they were led by the College's Sixth Form students.Throughout the day, the children worked in teams to complete eight different activities, each with its own rules and objectives. Every challenge required them to think carefully, solve problems, and work together to achieve the best possible outcome. One of the most memorable activities was the tyre stacking challenge. Rose W described it by saying:“The tyre stacking activity was so hard because it was difficult to keep them in order.”As the day progressed, the children's communication skills developed, learning the importance of listening carefully to instructions, respecting one another's ideas, and knowing when to contribute and when to listen. Their teamwork was outstanding throughout the day.The pupils celebrated each other's successes and always spoke to one another with kindness and respect. If someo

First thoughts from our new Head, Sally Moulton

I have recently joined SCS as Head and am looking forward to many years’ tenure here. I have a strong track record of success in school leadership and was so drawn to the values that underpin daily life in this school. It is, without a doubt, an outstanding school that provides children with high quality teaching across a broad and balanced curriculum so that our pupils have opportunities to push at plenty of doors and explore their aptitude for what lies before them. We offer a huge variety of opportunities for children and cater for all family needs; whether that is a day place, flexi-boarding or the full boarding experience in our magical ‘home from home’ Old School House boarding accommodation. When I see the gorgeous experiences our pupils have here, I wish I had been a child at SCS when I was at school!

We are very pleased to be able to tell you that following the recruitment process last week Mrs Sophie Baber has accepted our offer of the post of interim Head for the Lent and Trinity terms. Sophie brings a wealth of experience to the role having worked with children of all ages in both day and boarding schools, most recently as Head of Brookham School in Hampshire. She greatly impressed us at interview and it is clear that she will bring great enthusiasm to the role.
25th anniversary of Children's Chance

It was a real pleasure to welcome into school, Jane and Tony Miller, along with the mayor of Salisbury, Councillor Mr Atiqul Hoque, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the charity Children's Chance, a Salisbury-based charity working to provide opportunities for children in the local area. Jane and Tony launched the charity in 1998 here at the school in the BSR and it was wonderful to hear how it has evolved over the years, and to hear the inspirational stories about the countless children they have supported in that time. Children's Chance is a charity which embodies our school value of Community.

Last Friday we welcomed many parents, pupils and alumni who bought an engraved brick to come and see the refurbished swimming pool changing rooms. Our guest of honour Richard Griffiths cut the ribbon to officially open the newly renovated facility. Richard is a former pupil and son of Mr Griffiths, SCS Head Master 1933 to 1958, who was responsible for the initial construction of the pool. Everyone greatly enjoyed Richard's speech and the pupils loved seeing their names on the bricks! Thank you everyone for your hugely valued support.

Year 6 to Avebury Ring

Year 6 had the most amazing day at Avebury. The children explored the henge and stone circle, as well as Silbury hill and West Kennet long barrow. The year group were incredible ambassadors for the school, and asked some brilliant questions to the local archaeologist on site. They loved investigating the artefacts in the museum, and then getting up close to the incredible Sarsen stones in the Avebury stone circle. The children were enthusiastic throughout the day, and completed a field sketch, as well as a treasure hunt using coordinates around the long barrow. A great adventure!

Year 8 Music Scholars give a outstanding performance

The Year 8 Music Scholars gave an outstanding concert on their first instruments. The standard of playing was exceptional, as was the camaraderie in evidence. These 12 and 13 year olds were playing well beyond their years. I am so proud of them all, they have worked really hard over the holidays (which, bearing in mind they were all at school until Christmas Day, is particularly impressive) and it has been an absolute pleasure to practise and prepare with them. It was lovely to see a number of current Year 7s in the audience, looking ahead to what they will be doing in a year’s time! We wish the Year 8s all the very best of luck as they visit their senior schools to take their scholarships in the weeks ahead. Miss Lamb, Director of Music.

Year 8 Conservation Project

Year 8 led a community conservation project, laying a 10 year old hedge on the Harnham Water Meadows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). They did a remarkable job, showing fantastic teamwork, physical stamina and skill to successfully lay nearly 50 metres of hedge. King Charles III, who is patron of the National Hedgelaying Society and champion of the traditional craft, believes in the importance of hedgerows as the UK's 'single biggest nature reserve'. He has previously spoken of how laying hedges helps him keep fit whilst doing something for the environment.

Jason emphasised the demand for highly creative, passionate people and predicts that technology will continue to revolutionise today's jobs. Many of the audience were delighted to hear his opinion that skills of gaming will even compliment those they practise in school! The Upper Prep posed some excellent questions ranging from the construction of HS2 to the hot topic of 'green washing'.
Year 7 visited the Cranborne Estate and had the chance to see some of the brilliant ways farmers are creating habitats for wildlife whose populations have declined in recent years. We also were taught how to lay hedges which interestingly is King Charles’s favourite hobby! It makes hedges a much better home and corridor for birds, mammals and insects. Some of my favourite parts of the day included seeing hares, grey partridges and other rare ground nesting birds, and creating video reports on our learning. We’re now making group presentations, evaluating whether we can produce food and conserve wildlife.

Attendees participated in arts and crafts, trialled whittling and wattling, and practised survival and bushcraft skills. Younger visitors made ‘cakes’ in the mud kitchen and wands out of sticks, feathers and wool, and everyone had a turn at cooking over the campfire and creating clay faces to decorate the school’s trees.
Our 15 fruit trees, delivered just last week, are already in the ground in Conservation Corner thanks to the year 8 pupils ably assisted by Mr Marriott himself! Spades flew through the rich topsoil before hitting tough ground littered with flint and chalk. It was hard work to ensure each tree had a hole big enough to establish itself. The activity illuminated the pupils' learning about factors influencing healthy soils and each pair of pupils had to evaluate the suitability of the microclimate of the area chosen, including staking the tree on the opposite side to the prevailing wind.

They can measure almost anything, including motion, altitude, light, magnetic fields, temperature and more and connect wirelessly to the Chromebooks to transmit any data collected. Year 7 have been using them to investigate how the strength of an electromagnet’s field relates to the number of turns of wire in the coil of the electromagnet. We are all looking forward to linking up with Mr Newbery and attaching them to rockets to measure acceleration and altitude.

Not only does every child in the Prep school take part, in fact every child is in the choir. Each year the pupils in Year 7 and 8 have the opportunity in their music lessons to write carols and the accompanying melody. The best four are chosen by a panel of judges and sung by the all pupils at the Carol Service. This year, the pupils once again sung, read and performed to an astonishing standard. Congratulations to all the pupils and to Susie Lamb, Director of Music and the VMT's.

What better way to end the term than with a lunchtime netball match between the Year 7&8 girls and staff? It was fast and furious with more than a few tumbles (mostly staff) on display. Mr Reynolds and Mr Barnard eventually got the hang of where they were allowed to go and Mr Frost managed not to flatten any children today. The girls' speed and agility more than made up for the tentacled arms of Mr Williams and Mr Frost. Amazingly the staff clinched it by one goal (final score 4:3) but the girls played a blinder.

We use this scheme at SCS from Nursery to Year 5. It allows lessons to be lively and interactive, and enables children to learn visually, aurally and kinaesthetically. The children are quickly picking up lots of new French vocabulary and phrases and putting it all to good use. Lessons have been full of games, songs and rhymes, alongside writing activities, and a new element introduced to these children this year is role-play. We use cue cards to remind the children of the vocabulary they have learnt and they use this to hold a ‘real’ conversation. The focus is on correct pronunciation and fluency.

Even though technology and typing are dominating written communication, it is still important to value the techniques required when using pen and paper.
