The Key Cup: Annual Prose & Poetry Competition

The Key Cup: Annual Prose & Poetry Competition

Today, on World Book Day, we were delighted to celebrate the power of words through the Key Cup, our annual Prose & Poetry Competition. This year’s theme was “Beyond the Stars”, inspiring pupils to explore imagination, wonder and the limitless possibilities of storytelling.

Open to pupils from Year 2 to Year 8, the Key Cup invites pupils to select, learn and perform a poem or prose extract. The competition is not simply about memorisation; it is about interpretation, confidence and bringing literature to life. Through careful preparation, pupils develop an understanding of rhythm, tone and meaning, learning how to communicate emotion and narrative with clarity and conviction.

Competitions such as this are immensely valuable. They nurture a love of language, deepen comprehension and build confidence in public speaking — a skill that will serve pupils far beyond the classroom. On World Book Day, as we celebrate the joy of reading, it feels especially fitting to celebrate the spoken word too. When pupils stand and recite, they connect with great writers in a powerful and personal way, discovering that literature is meant to be heard as well as read.

We were honoured this year to welcome our Governor, Nick Brown, former Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Shiplake College, who generously judged the competition. He commented on the remarkable confidence, clarity and maturity shown across all age groups.

Congratulations to our winners:

Junior Winner: Safira - Year 2
Intermediate Winner: Jessica - Year 6
Senior Winner: Alice G - Year 8

We warmly congratulate all pupils who took part, and especially our finalists, for their superb delivery, expression and thoughtful interpretation. The standard was exceptionally high, and every participant should feel incredibly proud.

On this World Book Day, we celebrate not only the books that inspire us, but the voices of our pupils who bring those words vividly to life — truly taking us beyond the stars.
