Thursday 12 January 2023 Year 8 Music Scholars give a outstanding performance The Year 8 Music Scholars gave an outstanding concert on their first instruments. The standard of playing was exceptional, as was the camaraderie in evidence. These 12 and 13 year olds were playing well beyond their years. I am so proud of them all, they have worked really hard over the holidays (which, bearing in mind they were all at school until Christmas Day, is particularly impressive) and it has been an absolute pleasure to practise and prepare with them. It was lovely to see a number of current Year 7s in the audience, looking ahead to what they will be doing in a year’s time! We wish the Year 8s all the very best of luck as they visit their senior schools to take their scholarships in the weeks ahead. Miss Lamb, Director of Music.

Monday 12 December 2022 Year 8 Conservation Project Year 8 led a community conservation project, laying a 10 year old hedge on the Harnham Water Meadows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). They did a remarkable job, showing fantastic teamwork, physical stamina and skill to successfully lay nearly 50 metres of hedge. King Charles III, who is patron of the National Hedgelaying Society and champion of the traditional craft, believes in the importance of hedgerows as the UK's 'single biggest nature reserve'. He has previously spoken of how laying hedges helps him keep fit whilst doing something for the environment.

Wednesday 16 November 2022 Upper Prep's Knowledge Night Enrichment Programme with Jason Lovering Jason Lovering, founder of the environmental company Five Rivers, gave a fascinating insight into jobs in his sector as part of the Upper Prep's Knowledge Night Enrichment Programme. Jason emphasised the demand for highly creative, passionate people and predicts that technology will continue to revolutionise today's jobs. Many of the audience were delighted to hear his opinion that skills of gaming will even compliment those they practise in school! The Upper Prep posed some excellent questions ranging from the construction of HS2 to the hot topic of 'green washing'. Such talks stretch our thinking, giving the children an invaluable opportunity to hear about different careers, stories and advice from a multitude of backgrounds.

Thursday 3 November 2022 Year 7 Conservation Day on the Cranborne Estate Year 7 visited the Cranborne Estate and had the chance to see some of the brilliant ways farmers are creating habitats for wildlife whose populations have declined in recent years. We also were taught how to lay hedges which interestingly is King Charles’s favourite hobby! It makes hedges a much better home and corridor for birds, mammals and insects. Some of my favourite parts of the day included seeing hares, grey partridges and other rare ground nesting birds, and creating video reports on our learning. We’re now making group presentations, evaluating whether we can produce food and conserve wildlife.
