Music Matters

Title

Music Matters

Give the gift of music to Salisbury’s children

With your support, Music Matters will bring the joy of music into classrooms across Salisbury and give children the chance to benefit from Salisbury Cathedral School’s award-winning education.

The  project aspires to:

  • Fund two years of singing tuition in local primary schools, helping children find their voices and experience the educational benefits and joy of collective singing.
  • Create a 2-year 110% bursary place for a child entering Year 5, who would not otherwise be able to attend our school, chosen for their love of music and natural musical ear. This award will cover all school fees plus uniform, trips, and clubs, ensuring they can take part fully in school life and thrive within our musical community.

The investment required to achieve these important goals is £70,000, meaning it will take a true community effort to succeed, and every donation will count. A donation of just £16 with Gift Aid (£20 without Gift Aid) will pay for an academic field trip for a child on a bursary. For double that amount, £32 with Gift Aid (£40 without Gift Aid) will fund a music lesson for an entire class at one of our partner schools. Follow the donation link below to discover more ways your generosity can make a difference.

Music Matters is inspired by John Powell MBE (1931–2024). John found his voice as a chorister in the Salisbury Cathedral Choir between 1941 and 1945. He always said that his time at school and in the choir “changed his life.” He went on to devote his life to music and philanthropy, greatly enhancing the musical life of our city and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.

“My father was passionate about supporting the community, raising funds, and inspiring young musicians, so it is an honour for the Music Matters fund to be dedicated to his memory.” Gillian Broadway, John’s daughter
