Changes to boarding from September 2027

Changes to boarding from September 2027

Why has the decision been made to end boarding from September 2027?

The Governors have taken this decision following careful review of long-term trends in education and chorister recruitment. Over the past decade, an increasing number of choristers have come from local and regional families, for whom daily attendance is both practical and preferred. The move to a day-school model reflects these realities and allows the School to plan confidently for a sustainable future while continuing to invest in areas that benefit the greatest number of pupils, including choristers.

Does this decision mean the School is stepping away from its commitment to choristers?

Absolutely not. The chorister programme remains central to the identity of Salisbury Cathedral School and to its partnership with the Cathedral. The commitment to choral excellence, high musical standards and specialist teaching is unchanged. This decision is about strengthening and future-proofing the chorister experience, not diminishing it.

Will the Choir still be supported at the highest level?

Yes. Musical excellence, professional standards and the quality of the choral education offered to choristers will remain paramount. Investment in music, musicianship and specialist staff will continue, and the Choir will remain a defining feature of both the School and the Cathedral.

What will happen to current choristers?

Our intention is that there will be no immediate changes and we are committed to providing thriving boarding provision, as normal, until the end of the 2026–27 academic year. Current choristers will be supported fully throughout this period, and stability for those already in the system has been a key consideration in setting the timeline.

What about families already planning for future chorister entry?

The September 2027 timeline has been agreed specifically to provide families with the longest possible notice period. This allows time for thoughtful decision-making and open conversations with the School about future plans.

How will the future chorister model work without boarding?

Our intention is that the chorister experience will remain exactly as it is now but simply without the overnight, residential provision from September, 2027. However, the School now has an opportunity to work in collaboration with members of Chapter as well as chorister families to design a model that supports musical excellence, pupil wellbeing and

modern family life, while ensuring choristers continue to thrive academically, musically and socially.

Will parents be involved in shaping the future chorister experience?

Yes. Parents’ voices will be central to this process. The School is committed to listening carefully, engaging openly and ensuring chorister families play an active role as plans are developed.

Will the daily rhythm and demands of being a chorister change?

The core expectations of being a chorister — commitment, musical discipline and participation in the life of the Choir — will remain. Any changes to the structure of the day will be designed thoughtfully, with pupil wellbeing and sustainability firmly in mind.

Will choristers still feel a strong sense of belonging?

Yes. The sense of identity, purpose and belonging that comes with being a chorister is deeply valued and will be protected. Building strong community and pastoral support will remain a priority.

Why was September 2027 chosen?

This date was chosen deliberately to:

● Give families the longest possible period of notice

● Ensure stability for current and incoming choristers

● Allow time for careful planning and consultation

This approach avoids rushed decisions and ensures changes are made thoughtfully and collaboratively.

What support will be available for families affected by the change?

Sally Moulton, as Head, will provide individual support to families who will be directly impacted by the move to a day-school model. The School is committed to working closely with each family to understand their circumstances and offer guidance.

What happens next?

On the 4th March 2026, at 17:30, the School will host a meeting for parents of current choristers. This will provide an opportunity for discussion, questions and the beginning of a shared process to shape the future chorister experience together.
