Year 1 dig up the past

Year 1 took a short walk to visit Salisbury Museum and were met by our guide Ian, who introduced them to the treasures that they were going to explore during the morning as young archaeologists.

The children took turns to wear a hard hat and use various tools to move away layers of (felt!) soil and rock. An assortment of objects were found which the children managed to identify. They certainly put their knowledge of 'materials', gained in Science lessons this term, to good use.

They then moved around the museum finding, observing and sketching a whole variety of exciting things to look at and feel. It was lovely to see the wonder on the children's faces as they made many new discoveries and history was brought to life.

One of the highlights was the doors and drawers that the children could open to find all sorts of surprises lurking within. The morning flew by and it was all too soon time to return reluctantly to school with a lot of new knowledge and stories to tell.
