Year 4 Trip to Butser Ancient Farm

The Year 4 children had a lovely day at Butser Ancient farm in Waterlooville. We arrived as marauding Vikings but left as gentle people who had built wattle fence panels from hazel using incredible teamwork, made beautiful pottery decorated with Norse runes and had attempted spinning.

We were taught about the ancient breeds of goat and sheep kept at Butser and observed ‘Bronwyn’ the goat being milked. Everyone had a lovely time in the well-stocked gift shop. The gift shop is quite often the highlight of our trips but not so on this occasion. The children were fascinated by Iron age and Roman toilets. The latter loos definitely being the day’s highlight.

It was a busy day and we learnt so much about the Viking people and how they lived from our fabulous guide Eleanor.

The children and their parents made a super job of sourcing Viking outfits and really made the day special. The staff at Butser were very impressed by the arrival of ‘real’ Vikings and by the behaviour of our super children. Thank you to Mrs Beech and Mrs Law for accompanying us and ‘being’ Vikings too.
