Y4 connect with nature at Magdalen Farm

Last Tuesday, the whole of year 4 was evacuated to Magdalen Farm in Dorset to escape the potential dangers that threatened Salisbury during the Second world War. As soon as we arrived, Mrs Thomas, the billeting officer, directed the children to their accommodation.

The children were much relieved to hear that they would be staying together and not dispersing to local farms, vicarages, pubs and village halls as she had suggested!

Our first activity was an orienteering exercise-cum-scavenger hunt which included map reading around the farm and classifying different trees followed by creating wonderful natural sculptures. We were then showed poly tunnels containing delicious vegetables and salads which we sampled and which would be used in our meals on the farm.

Throughout the rest of our stay we sang songs around a campfire while roasting marshmallows, fed chickens, collected eggs, chatted to pigs and goats, made sandwiches, pizzas and smoothies and, all in all, had the most successful of trips.

We learnt an enormous amount about sustainable living and the environment and Mrs Thomas and I were so impressed by the children’s exemplary behaviour and attitude throughout the trip. Well done, Year 4!
