Through the eyes of Constable

Salisbury Museum's 'Constable in Context' exhibition within the Cathedral Close has given the school an ideal opportunity for a cross-curricular focus on our local environment through the eyes of a famous painter.

Year 3 began the week with a trip to the Museum for a workshop where the children were introduced to the famous painter himself, John Constable (an actor) who told the children about his life and love of landscape painting.

The children then explored the gallery to look at his painting Salisbury Cathedral from the water meadow (1832) in detail, before re-interpreting the dramatic skyline themselves with mixed media.

Back in school, we have explored the locations of his other Salisbury paintings, in particular behind the lake and across to Harnham. It was exciting to step outside our classroom and stand where Constable painted his view of the Water Meadows.
