New club is just their 'cup of tea'

Monday lunchtime saw the inaugural meeting of the SCS Tea Club. This has been long in the planning and has involved the initiators, Ollie and Max, visiting Whittards to discuss their ideas. Whittards have very kindly agreed to ‘sponsor’ us with some free samples in return for some feedback. We have also collected a range of other loose and bagged teas to try in the coming weeks. The boys arrived today with all the necessary paraphernalia; tea pots, sampling glasses, strainers, some of us brought our own bone china cups. Mr Stewart kindly came along and donated a set of filters.

After much excitement, we agreed to start off by trying the Elderflower Earl Grey and Coconut Truffle teas. Opinion was almost unanimous that we preferred the Elderflower but that both were over-scented and nobody particularly liked either. We felt that the Coconut was excessively sweet and the scent of vanilla overpowered all other senses. However, when reading the tasting notes, Ollie discovered that coconut has no natural sugar!

Next week we intend to sample a range of Lady Grey teas, some bagged, some loose. We will try with milk, plain and with lemon and again write up our views in our notes. Future plans include looking at teas from different countries to see if we can spot geographical variations.
