Race for the Line - regional finals

Year 7 put their design and technology skills to the test at the National Bloodhound Micro:bit Rocket Car Competition 2017.

On the first day of their Easter holidays, eight enthusiastic pupils participated in the preliminary round of the competition at Crestwood College, Eastleigh. In spite of the cold weather and strong cross winds two of our team cars, Doodlebug and Stardust, recorded speeds in excess of 45MPH which moved them into the Regional Finals at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

Last week, the SCS competitors travelled to RAF Odiham, the UK’s main Chinook helicopter base, for the Regional Finals. Our teams had to build two new cars from scratch, without any teacher support and under the scrutiny of Bloodhound and RAF staff! They used their experience from the previous rounds to create two super-efficient aerodynamic cars which they raced on the main runway. It was a spectacular sight watching the fire, smoke and vapour from the solid fuel rocket engines (potassium nitrate, sulphur, charcoal) power the cars down the main runway. Once again our cars ran very well, but this time, were pipped to the post and fell a couple of miles per hour short of gaining places at the National Finals.

The children enjoyed making their cars under test conditions and taking part in this prestigious competition. They also enjoyed looking around the RAF base, watching helicopters swooping around the base and having a personal tour of a new Chinook. A final highlight was meeting the Station Commander, Group Captain P J Robinson OBE DFC, and having the opportunity to ask him questions about his base. All in all, a very excting day.
