Year 2 Trip to Breamore House Museum

On Tuesday 25th September, Year 2 jumped into the mini bus with excitement and headed to Breamore House Museum.

Once there, we went back in time and visited all the different places in the village. The first place we visited was the local Garage, where Mr Lawrence was fixing a very old car. Next was the laundry room where the children learnt that the water came from a pump in the village and was carried to the laundry room. Mrs D carried out a fantastic demonstration of how the washing would have been done. The children looked at a tin tub, washboard, dolly, mangle and an iron which had to be heated on the fire before the invention of electricity.

The next stop was the best! The children visited Mr Candy’s shop. There were so many things for sale that we spent ages looking at all the different produce. Much of it we can still buy today but the packaging is different. It was super to be able to compare what it was like then to a great big supermarket today. The bakery looked very tempting with some delicious loaves of bread for sale, making our tummies rumble! Another highlight was the school room. We all thought it looked rather strict with the desks in lines and a chalk board full of spellings and times tables to learn.

We were also lucky enough to compare a farmer’s cottage to our houses today. The main room with the fireplace was the hub of the house; the farmer’s washing was even hanging in front of the fireplace. No tumble dryer in sight! Finally, we headed off to see the dairy, blacksmith, wheelwright and Mr Smith’s Saddlers Shop.

What an exhausting but fun day. The children were a delight to take and represented the school fantastically well.
