Music

Visitors to Salisbury Cathedral School cannot possibly miss the sound of music as they walk around. Throughout the day, music can be heard in every corner of the school. An incredible 95% of the Prep school learns at least one instrument and many members of the Pre-Prep are also learning.

Our magnificent team of visiting instrumental teachers are the unsung heroes of our musical success.  They teach the whole range of orchestral and other instruments to the children.  More than 200 lessons are taught each week by a team of 23 teachers.  Their expertise, enthusiasm and sheer tenacity helps our children to achieve marvellous things.

Our ensemble programme is the envy of many senior schools and includes five string quartets, three brass ensembles, a full orchestra and a superb jazz band.  Such breadth gives our pupils many opportunities to create music together and brings so much enjoyment.  Our concerts through the year are truly outstanding and such a credit to the considerable talents of our pupils.

Each year group receives class music tuition, which covers practical work such as singing, composing and improvising using the latest Apple Mac technology.  Year 3 also has the opportunity to experience a range of orchestral instruments through the Music Circus, helping them make the best choice of instrument to play.

Singing is a major part of our musical life with everyone contributing to inspirational singing in our assemblies.  There are four school choirs in addition to the Cathedral Choirs and all children in Years 3, 4 and 5 are members of the Junior Choir. The whole school sings in the annual carol service, where carols written by the pupils are regularly performed.
