Year 7 Camp
This was the third Year 7 camping trip to Purbeck. We left on Sunday afternoon, arriving in time for a barbeque before setting up our tents at Bradle Farm in Kimmeridge. The next day we explored the varied eco-systems of the dunes at Studland, and Noah and David excelled with their specialist knowledge of dune vegetation.
An extensive transect of the dunes involved climbing up slopes of marram grass and clambering through shell-holes of bell-heather with ranging-poles, tape-measures and clinometers. What the resident reptiles made of us we will probably never know! Sausages, toasted marshmallows and ‘murder in the dark’ brought our first full day to an enjoyable close. On Tuesday morning we went to Durlston Country Park to study the coastal processes. In the afternoon we explored the rock-pools at Kimmeridge: low-tide, ‘snorkelling for ‘softies’ and a new water-proof camera offered views that few in the group have experienced before.
After a bite to eat at the local farm shop an excellent learning experience ended.
On Wednesday we bade farewell to the horses, cows and sheep which had been our neighbours so far this term! We travelled to Swanage for urban studies and a little well-earned ‘retail therapy’ before crossing Poole Harbour by ferry and making our weary, but contented way back to Salisbury.
Our thanks go to Mr and Mrs Hole, our hosts and Iona Gray, Gillian Bathe, Duncan Hodson and Andrew Stewart, who felt privileged to study such a fine environment in the very good company of the new Year Sevens.
