Year 3 pupils visit Sevington Victorian School
Year 3 pupils at Salisbury Cathedral School travelled back to 1898 when, resplendently dressed as Victorian scholars, they spent the day in the authentic surroundings of Sevington Victorian School near Chippenham, under the watchful eye of Miss Squire, the redoubtable Headmistress. A traditional day was followed and included copybook writing with pen and ink, writing on slates, reciting poetry, arithmetic, times tables practice, bible reading, elocution, sewing, planting seeds, and outdoor recreation with hoops, hobby horses and other Victorian style toys.
It was a wonderfully evocative experience for the children. They thoroughly enjoyed the day and absorbed a great deal about the school days of Victorian children in a way that was much more memorable and valuable than it would ever have been if taught in a classroom.
