Year 3 Fossil Hunters
It was not necessarily a bad thing that the rain came on the day that Year 3 were due to visit Lyme Regis for a guided fossil hunt. Bad weather can have the effect of washing hitherto unseen fossils from the cliffs. It also churns up the sea, which often reveals geological treasures too. So, after a fascinating introductory talk from the experts and suitably clad in waterproofs and sturdy footwear, the children spent a busy couple of hours on the beach, each engrossed in his own search, amidst shouts of delight when another fossil was unearthed. There were some incredible finds; mostly ammonites, belumnites, sea lilies and fool’s gold. The most spectacular find of the day, however, was part of the vertebra of an ichthyosaurus – over 200 million years old. An exciting moment to remember!
