New Girl Choristers are welcomed into the Cathedral Choir

As part of the celebrations for the 20th Anniversary of the Girls’ Choir four new choristers were welcomed into the choir in a ceremony at Evensong on Sunday 25th September 2011.

Georgia Darke, Cecily Moorsom, Verity Peterken and Megan McCormack were made full choristers after spending the past year as probationers in the choir. During the ceremony they were asked if they wanted to become choristers to which the answer was a resounding “Yes I do!”. The girls were then clothed in the full robes of a girl chorister which included the Sarum green tabard for the first time.

Also at Evensong 6 Year 8 choristers were promoted to positions of responsibility within the Girl’s Choir. Flora Davies was appointed Dean’s Chorister; Rosanna Wicks, Precentor’s Chorister; Kelly Frost, Hermione Leitch, Helena Mackie and Georgiana Roxburgh, were appointed Turners.

Following Evensong there was the traditional bumping ceremony where each new chorister is bumped on the head with the largest Bible the cathedral can find. (The boys tradition includes hitting their heads against an ancient stone in the North Quire Aisle!). They were then awarded a medallion to mark the huge contribution that personal donations to the Girl’s Choir Trust have made to the Choral Foundation.

Finally there was a celebratory cake to cut which this year was mirrored by a similar cutting of the 20th Anniversary cake by the former Dean, Hugh Dickinson and Director of Music Richard Seal whose vision it was to start a Girls choir 20 years ago.
