Half Term Trip to Normandy
The Head Master, Paul Greenfield, led a party of twenty eight pupils to the landing beaches of northern France during the half term break. With the benefit of additional historical expertise from Brigadier Richard Folkes, a parent of the school, the pupils gained valuable insight into the events of June 1944 and D Day. They visited Arromanches, Omaha Beach and the American cemetery, Pointe du Hoc and Pegasus Bridge, where the owner of a nearby café, the first building to be liberated on D Day, shared with the children her memories of that day. This was primary evidence of the very best kind. A highlight of the trip was the visit to the grave of a former pupil of the school, Lieutenant Frederick Snook, who died aged thirty one in 1944 and a mystery was discovered, why did the grave stone and the military records have different dates of death? To be continued................
The pupils left flowers and a message which spoke of their pride in remembering him each year at the Remembrance service in their school chapel.
